What is a Funnel? Meaning, Stages, and How to Read One

Also known as: sales funnel, marketing funnel

Short answer

A funnel is the set of stages a prospective buyer passes through, from first seeing your ad to finally buying. It is called a funnel because the number of people shrinks at every stage. Its purpose is to show which stage loses the most people.

Example

10,000 people see the ad, 400 click, 120 start a chat, 24 buy. Every arrow between stages is where you lose people.

The simple way to think about it

Picture a shop on a busy street. Many people walk past. Some stop at the window. Some come in. Some ask the price. Some pay.

A funnel records that shrinkage so you know which door people turned back at.

A funnel with real numbers

Saw the ad10,000-
Clicked the ad4004.0%
Started a chat12030.0%
Answered and served9680.0%
Bought2425.0%

Chat to purchase runs at only 25%. Adding budget at the top will not fix that number. What needs fixing is how the team answers and closes.

Common mistakes

  • Watching only the top stage. More traffic does not mean more sales.
  • Counting volume instead of rates. The step rate is what reveals the problem.
  • Using one ad message for every stage. People who do not know you are not ready for a buy-now offer.

Frequently asked questions

What are the funnel stages?
Most commonly three: ToF for people who do not know you yet, MoF for people who are interested and comparing, and BoF for people ready to buy. Each stage needs different ad messaging.
How do I find which stage is leaking?
Calculate the percentage moving between stages, not the raw counts. The stage with the sharpest drop against its own normal is where the problem lives. Fix that one stage before adding budget at the top.
Do all businesses have the same funnel?
No. A cheap product can be bought straight after one ad. An expensive one needs many touches over weeks. Your funnel shape is set by price and by how much trust the purchase requires.
