What is Conversion Rate? Meaning, Formula, and How to Raise It

Also known as: conversion rate, CVR

Short answer

Conversion rate is the percentage of people who took the action you wanted, out of everyone who had the chance to take it. A 3% conversion rate means 100 visitors produced 3 buyers or sign-ups.

Formula

Conversion Rate = (Conversions / Visitors) x 100%

Example

A sign-up page opens 4,000 times and produces 120 sign-ups. Conversion rate = (120 / 4,000) x 100% = 3%.

The simple way to think about it

Picture a hundred people walking into your shop. Conversion rate is how many of those hundred walk out holding something they paid for.

Why this is the cheapest number to fix

Conversion rateAd spendClicksConversionsCPA
2%$8,00010,000200$40
3%$8,00010,000300$26.70

Ad spend and click volume did not change. Only the landing page did.

How to raise it

  1. Cut form fields. Every extra field discards some visitors.
  2. Speed the page up. A slow page loses people before they see the offer.
  3. One action per page. Two competing buttons make people choose neither.
  4. State price and terms plainly. A surprise at the end stops people.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good conversion rate?
It depends on the action measured. Tapping a WhatsApp button can reach the low teens. Direct website purchases often sit under 3%. Compare against your own page history.
Why is raising conversion rate cheaper than raising budget?
More budget means more cost. A higher conversion rate means more results at the same cost. Moving from 2% to 3% alone cuts your CPA by a third.
My conversion rate dropped after traffic grew. Is that normal?
Often yes. Extra traffic usually comes from colder audiences. Read conversion rate per ad source, not just the blended figure.
