What is Event Blocking? When Meta Holds a Custom Event
Also known as: blocked by meta, event blocking meta, blocked event, manage event blocking
Short answer
Event blocking is the state in Events Manager where Meta holds an event, almost always an event with a name you invented, until the business owner confirms that their own system sends it. While the event is blocked, you cannot use it for a custom conversion, a custom audience, or ad optimisation.
The statuses you see and what they mean
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Action required | The event waits for your decision |
| Blocked | The event is refused until you lift the block |
| Confirmed by you | The event is allowed and ready to use |
| Inactive | The event did not arrive recently |
What must never go into an event name
Never put health data, financial data, or any other personal data in an event name. Meta holds or blocks an event like that, and your business carries the responsibility. Use a short name that states the action, for example TrialStarted.
Before you press Confirm
Confirm only the events you recognise. When you press Confirm, your business declares to Meta that your own system sends the event and that it follows Meta policy. Ask your ad manager first about any name you do not know.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is my event marked Blocked by Meta?
- Because the name is not a standard event that Meta already knows. A name you invented is held until the business owner confirms it, so that an event name is never used to send sensitive data.
- How do I allow the event?
- Open Events Manager, select your pixel, then open the Settings tab. Under Data restrictions, click Review below Manage event blocking, tick the event you recognise, then confirm. The full steps are in the Meta CAPI guide.
- Can a standard event be blocked too?
- No. Standard events such as Lead, Contact, and Purchase are already known to Meta, so they wait for nobody to confirm them.
