What is ABO? Per-Ad-Set Budget and When to Use It

Also known as: Ad Set Budget Optimization

Short answer

ABO puts a separate budget on each ad set, so you decide how much each one receives. It is the setting to use when you want every audience genuinely tested.

The usual working pattern

  1. Test with ABO. Build several ad sets with different audiences, the same budget, and the same creative.
  2. Allow enough time. Wait until each ad set has enough conversions to judge, not one or two days.
  3. Move the winners into CBO. Once you know which audiences work, consolidate them and let the system split budget.
  4. Switch losers off with the reason recorded, so you do not repeat the same test in three months.

Frequently asked questions

When is ABO better than CBO?
When you are testing new audiences and want each to receive an equal budget. CBO will starve an audience that is slow to deliver before you have enough data to judge it.
What is the minimum budget per ad set?
Enough to produce a few conversions a day, so the ad set can exit learning. As a rule of thumb, a daily budget of around five times your target CPA.
Must I pick one for the whole account?
No. The common pattern is ABO for testing new audiences, then moving the winners into a CBO campaign to scale.
